It's our annual GARDEN PARTY! Are you suffering from cabin fever? You won't find a place anywhere in the valley that has more of a "bring spring on!" feel than our greenhouses March 14th and 15th! In addition to being chocked full of new ideas, houseplants, and great new gardening products, we'll have on hand various people we buy product from to explain firsthand some of these new products.
We had a great time! Check back with us next year as we already have great plans for 2009 - third weekend in March... as always!
Butterfly Conservatory - June 14-22nd, 2008
Every summer, we open up a 30x30 space in the greenhouse, encases it with netting and build a butterfly conservatory that the Harrisonburg/Rock-ingham Day Care uses as a fundraiser. Young and old alike enjoy the chance to visit. The Harrisonburg Kiwanas lend their assistance by being present as guides and educators. 300 butterflies are released in the conservatory throughout the week long event. Visitors will see Monarchs, various Swallotails, Painted Ladies, and many others, all native species. Cost is $5 per person, 100% of which goes to the Day Care. Sunday, June 22 is a family fun day with a farm animal petting zoo, fire trucks, resuce squad, and many fun and games. Bring the kids... bring Grandma! Everyone loves the butterflies!
Family Fun Day was a big hit this year! Over $8500 was raised to benefit the Day Care as they search for a new home. The Daily News Record article in the Escape was picked up by the AP Wire service and we got coverage across the entire state... even the Chicago Tribune! Thanks to everyone who participated and helped with this wonderful event for the daycare! Back Home on the Farm Corn Maze - August 15th - November 7th, 2008- Corn Maze Location (540-442-6493)

Fall brings out the kid in all of us at Back Home on the Farm and Hess Greenhouses. The 3.5 acre cornfield has been groomed all season for a maze that not only challenges all of us, but teaches about agriculture as well. The corn maze is designed by the maze masters at Maize Quest - Bring a group, challenge family members, guys against the girls, just grab a flag and game sheet and you’re off on a fun filled adventure. Special group rates are available.
Younger visitors will have a great time visiting the animals, tackling the barnyard maze, playing "barnyard golf", or sliding down the 60 ft. giant slide! Pick a pumpkin in season from the pumpkin patch, go for a tractor ride, make music in our "Sound Garden" and race our rubber duckies! Don’t forget the John Deere Test Pedal Tractor test track. Scarecrows are everywhere to brighten your day and give you directions. It's all in great fun! Pumpkins, gourds, pansies, fall decorations are all on sale at the maze - concession stand open on Saturday and Sunday. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch or snack and relax under the shade trees.
New this year is Virginia's ONLY carousel! 30 horses are ready to delight you, all completely repainted to represent Virginias rich history of famous people! Carousel rides are not included in the Maze admission price.
