Owners Gary and Lynne Hess grew up as farm kids, 4-H and FFA’ers, and were fortunate to raise their family the same way. Originally a hobby, Hess Greenhouse started with a single 10x10 greenhouse frame in the driveway. Six more greenhouses eventually were constructed at the farm for 12,000 sq. ft. of growing space inside and additional outside growing areas for mums and perennials. This area served as a wholesale growing operation for many years while Gary and Lynne both held down full time jobs. When the decision was made to try retail sales, the search began for a location on the South end of Harrisonburg.
Our retail location was opened 12 years ago and now covers about an acre at the Shenandoah Heritage Market on Rt. 11 South of Harrisonburg. We are known for our wide variety of herbs, annuals, and perennials. You’ll find plenty of hanging baskets and hundreds of ideas for containers for your home, inside or out. We keep on hand a great selection of pottery in all shapes, sizes and colors for your houseplants and outdoor container garden needs.
Over the years, we held a fall festival at the greenhouse. When that outgrew our space at the market, the Corn Maze “Back Home on the Farm” was born. We feature all the fall fun things, scarecrows, the corn maze, farm animal exhibit, pumpkin patch, tractor rides and much more on the farm, along with a supply of fun facts about agriculture. In 2007, over 5000 school children from 5 surrounding counties visited the corn maze and other activities. Families and the general pulic are welcome on weekends throughout the fall.
In spring of 2007, the Hess family took a step in yet another direction when Gary returned home from an auction in Onancock to announce that he had bought the 30 horse carousel that his father wanted. Nancy and Nelson, Gary's parents, took on the responsibility of erecting a building that would house the carousel and some of the collections they had accumulated over the years of running an used furniture and antique business downtown called Hess Furniture.
Nancy's love of history shines through in the exhibit end of the building with rotational displays of valley antiques. The 2008 exhibit features "Kitchens of Yesteryear". This year's Back Home On The Farm displays are greatly expanded to include not only the maze, and carousel, but historical displays, an interactive greenhouse that challenges your knowledge of agriculture and how things grow, and the beginnings of gardens that we hope will be the start of a spring offering at the Farm in 2009.
The love of valley history, plants, agriculture, and young people drive our operations. The need for educational opportunities about our heritage and agriculture is so critical in today’s world. We've tackled a huge number of projects for our opening this August. Count on this family to have a lot of fun putting it all together. We hope you will enjoy it as well!
